This garden is in zone 9B, in the low desert near Phoenix. It was an empty square of hard compacted clay/sand.
Because of intense heat and scorching sun, we have to build layers of shade. Half the garden consistes of 8 different 8x4 metal raised beds, while the other half contains a fruit tree guild, where the trees will be pruned to stay 8 feet wide. A grape arbor will be between rows of the raised beds, and will provide some shade while supporting the grape vines and shade cloth. Each raised bed will have an arched trellis and possibly a vertical trellis.
The garden also has a glider bench and chair in a sitting area under the shade of a Mesquite tree.
