Pruning can be done any time from after completion of flowering until mid spring without sacrificing that years flowering. Pruning late in summer to fall opens air circulation in time for the threats of winter frost and snowdrop. Pruning in spring can delay flowering but is a good time to take down dead, winter-killed parts and shorten growth to the fat, vigorous buds. If you have the time, pruning twice a year is good.
Prune established plants heavily, back at least 1/3. Lavender in full sun can be expected to grow vigorously each year, and vigorous growers need a little yearly punishment to stay vigorous. With your pruning shears, aim to snip back all shoots at least 1/3.
Go heavier on older plants, but dont cut down to leafless wood. A good rule of thumb is to count to the third node above the woody part and then cut just above it. If you are lucky, all three nodes and some hidden nodes buried in the wood will wake up and grow for you. |

If risk of frost threatens, protect emerging shoots by drawing some soil over the top of them. When shoots reach 20cm (8"), mound up soil around the shoots leaving just a few cm showing. Repeat this process after a further 3 weeks.
Where space is limited, try growing Charlotte in potato bags on the patio.
Avoid planting in soil where potatoes have grown for two years in succession as this will increase the risk of disease. |

A Word of Caution: Wear thick gloves; raspberries have serious thorns. And use clean, sharp tools.
LATE WINTER / EARLY SPRING - (Before Bud Break)
Prune all canes that bore fruit last year; they won't fruit again. These will have grayish, peeling bark.
Remove any canes that have grown outside the 12 - 18 inch designated row footprint.
Remove any spindly or short canes.
Thin so that there is about 4-5 of the healthiest, tallest and fattest canes left per foot along the length of the row.
Tie remaining canes to your fencing.
To force your everbearing raspberries to produce only one crop in the fall, prune back the entire raspberry bush in early spring. As the canes grow back in the summer, remove outside suckers and thin the canes to about 6 inches apart. Keep the sturdiest canes. This technique will give you a larger fall harvest and is good if you also have summer bearing raspberry bushes and you want to stagger the harvests.
SUMMER
Prune dead, broken or diseased canes.
Prune any canes that poke up outside your designated row area.
Of course, you can prune broken, dead, diseased or infested canes at any time of the year, the sooner the better. |
