Garden Plans > 2017: All year

About this Garden Plan

This is my fall garden for 2017. Summer crops did pretty good however I did have some issues getting enough water to it this summer so you can see I'm adding a drip irrigation system to it this month. The raised beds dry out so much faster than ground planted plants! I use old hay as mulch over all the beds to help keep the moisture in and the weeds down.

Plan Notes

The blackberries and raspberries did rather well, but I need to move them as they are getting too much shade from the cedar tree behind the garden. Broccoli did very well. The cilantro, sage, and dill did well till it got hot. Then they went to seed and or just died. The basil and pineapple sage did well over summer though and the parsley is still hanging in there because the Salvia draped over top of it and shaded it all summer. Good harvest on peas, except I need to plant them sooner(December) The onions did fabulous! It was our largest harvest to date. They weren't huge, but were perfect for the two of us to use for one meal. The garlic did well till it got hot, then it died. I plan to plant garlic in the fall(October) and see how it does over winter. After we harvested the onions, I planted a few sweet potato slips in some of the empty beds. The onion bed grew fantastic HUGE sweets and the other bed did good too. I realize that sweets need lots of water. I had planted a few slips in two of the blue barrel feed troughs and they did very poorly. I believe the soil got too warm and the beds didn't hold enough water for them to grow. I will remove those blue barrel planters back to the barn. The first batch of green beans produced very well. The second batch (in middle bed) didn't produce at all. Again I think it was too hot... Tomatoes did well the year, especially the romas! Carrots are very small and are still in the garden to see if they will continue to get larger. Watermelon and canteloup produced very well but really used up too much space for the amount of fruit that I got. Squash bugs got the volunteer pumpkins that popped up. The salvia has taken over half of the one big bed. I need to contain it somehow next year as it sprawls all over. It does bring in TONS of bees though!!
